Thing 5 Digital Storytelling...

Content: Literature
Objective: 1. Students will create a book review of the novel Seedfolk. 2. Students will recreate a scene from the novel Seedfolk.

In an attempt to persuade others to read this story, students will work independently using Digital Storytelling to create a book review (think Siskel & Ebert). Students will include major aspects/highlights of the plot development. They will include their opinions of what they liked and/or disliked about the story as well what the author could have done to improve the novel overall.

or

Students will work in groups to reinact a scene from Seedfolk and will be interviewed by a student acting as a reporter investigating the success of the garden.

  1. Your idea is great. I just have a few questions. Are students recording one another and publishing the movie? Will their be any voice overlay - like the reporter making comments during the movie? The kids will have fun playing with this

    1. Tina, thank you for your feedback. During regular group work projects, students are assigned roles so everyone makes a contribution to the final product. I think it would be an excellent idea to have the students record one another and then publish the movie because it would then provide them an opportunity to review & critique their own work. I also agree that voice overlays would add a "professional" touch to their movies that the children will enjoy adding.

  2. Hands on is always a great way to introduce students to a new concept. Allowing them to think outside the book gives them room to move from concrete to abstract thinkers

  3. Monica, your students will love creating this book review! :) I would get with your Tech Specialist to ensure that the book reviews were posted to your school webpage.
